TikTok Becomes the Digital Stadium for Football Fans Across Africa as #SportsOnTikTok Surpasses 6.5 Million Videos

TikTok has strengthened its position as one of the leading destinations for sports entertainment and football culture in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, with more than 6.5 million videos created under the #SportsOnTikTok hashtag, reflecting the platform’s growing role in shaping how fans experience and participate in sports.

From match reactions and fan chants to tactical analysis, creator commentary, and behind-the-scenes moments, TikTok has evolved beyond a platform for watching sports highlights into a dynamic community where sports culture is created, shared, and experienced in real time.

Over the years, football communities across Africa have increasingly turned to TikTok as a digital co-viewing destination during major tournaments, using the platform to celebrate victories, debate performances, create memes, and tell stories that extend the excitement of the game far beyond the final whistle. From AFCON celebrations and Olympics reactions to creator-led storytelling, sports fandom on TikTok is becoming more participatory and community-driven.

Football Communities Continue to Thrive on TikTok in Nigeria and Across Africa

Football remains one of Nigeria’s most powerful cultural touchpoints, a trend that is strongly reflected on TikTok. According to 2025 data from GlobalWebIndex (GWI), 59% of TikTok users in Nigeria follow football, while 28% actively participate in the sport, underscoring the influence and scale of football communities on the platform.

Hashtags including #Soccer, #Football, #SuperEagles, and #NaijaFootball have become active hubs for fan conversations, match-day reactions, highlights, commentary, and creator-led discussions, bringing together passionate football communities from across the continent and connecting them to global audiences.

The platform also saw significant engagement during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with more than 1.2 million posts created globally under #AFCON2025, of which 28.6% originated from Sub-Saharan Africa, reinforcing TikTok’s growing role as a destination for real-time football discovery and fan engagement.

The Rise of Second-Screen Football Culture

TikTok is increasingly shaping the future of football fandom and World Cup culture by creating highly participatory viewing experiences that complement live broadcasts.

According to TikTok Sports Messaging Research conducted in collaboration with Ipsos in 2025:

  • 85% of sports fans globally use TikTok as a second-screen experience while following sports events.
  • 42% are more likely to tune into live matches after watching sports content on TikTok.
  • 90% take at least one action outside the platform after engaging with sports content on TikTok.
  • 72% of TikTok users globally enjoy fan edits, reaction videos, and other fan-made sports content.

These findings illustrate the platform’s influence not only as a destination for sports content consumption but also as a catalyst for deeper fan engagement, discovery, and participation.

Women Are Increasingly Driving Sports Conversations on TikTok

The growth of sports fandom on TikTok is also becoming increasingly inclusive. Women are playing a significant role in shaping sports engagement globally, with 64% of women identifying TikTok as their preferred destination for sports content, according to Ipsos’ 2025 research.

Women also accounted for 46% of all sports-related TikTok views during the first half of 2025, highlighting their growing influence within digital sports communities and reinforcing the platform’s role in creating more diverse and inclusive sports conversations.

Football Culture Is Being Built on TikTok

As football fandom evolves, TikTok continues to redefine how communities connect around the game. Through hashtags such as #SportsOnTikTok and #Soccer, fans across Africa and around the world are not simply watching football—they are collectively shaping its culture through storytelling, reactions, creativity, and shared experiences.

With millions of videos and an increasingly engaged global community, TikTok is emerging as a digital stadium where football culture comes alive, transforming passive spectators into active participants and creating a new era of fan-driven sports entertainment.
