Jinmi’s Renaissance is a quiet but emphatic proclamation of his artistic renewal; however, the titular essence of the project isn’t simply limited to rebirth; it is much more nuanced. It is about renewal, reclamation, and reaffirmation. Jinmi does not abandon his sonic signature—soulful melodies and velvety vocals but broadens his musical scope, proving that create melodies that capture the quiet moments.
There’s always been a conversational sense of Jinmi’s lyricism and vocal tone. Projects like Hold You and Saro carry a mild, mellow temperature that invokes thoughts and introspection. Renaissance maintains this tradition, but produces a level of refinement that hasn’t really been explored in previous chapters. As Jinmi defines it, “Renaissance for me is an era that represents an artistic rebirth…”
The thematic essence of the project rests on its exploration of love and affection. Each track builds on the other, each with its sense of style and tone, whilst still maintaining the thematic focus. He prefaces the EP with Sade, a sincere love song that expresses his affection and protection for his muse. It is a warm, heartfelt track that carries a soft but vibrant feel. You keep your head bopping to the track, but the tension doesn’t stop you from internalising the lyrics. In a sense, he manages to perfectly balance conflicting elements to create a refined listening experience.
Ladder is the next track on the EP, and is a subdued shift from Sade. He transitions from soft to slightly more upbeat with seamless ease. Ladder feels more Afrobeats than most of the tracks in the EP, which greatly adds to his sonic dexterity. By introducing dramatic Afrobeat sounds and pulsating hooks, Jinmi is intentional in expanding his musical palette, unequivocally making the project something everyone can enjoy.
In Scented Candle, Jinmi leans into passionate and sensual production. Evidently, Jinmi tells us that his love is not just emotional but physical. He describes his muse as “sexy”, and he wants to see her “undress from here”. This passionate lyricism presents emphatic imagery, painting the picture of a late, romantic scene.
Enjoyment Amaka is a mellow, vibeful track that keeps you longing for more. It’s livelier and filled with a lot of rhythmic energy. It feels less serious, but more playful and carefree. Saro, however, is more high-paced, maintaining a more energetic and contagious feel.
Hold You draws the project to a conclusion and ends our enthralling journey around the album. The track leans into his foreign influences. As the title suggests, it explores physical closeness and the warmth of emotional connection.
The project is not just evidence of Jinmi’s talent as an artist, but it also accentuates the intentionality behind each track. Each song on the album not only builds on the themes of love and desire, but is also deeply laced with finely knitted lyricisms that build on their respective titles. Sade is an ode to hischerised lover, Ladder is a metaphysical reference to elevation and progress, while Scented Desire is a tale of sensual pursuit, capturing thoughts of desire through vivid and infectious imagery. Instead of giving arbitrary labels, each song title widens the EP’s narrative and reinforces the thematic focal point.
The EP also shows great production with great song layering and instrumentation. Jinmi’s voice remains the centrepiece. There are no sonic distractions or crude fillers, just ambient tones and light percussion.
Overall, Renaissance excels because it doesn’t disregard Jinmi’s musical identity. It is not the rebirth of something different, but the rebirth of progression and refinement. He wants us to know that he is growing not just as an artist but also as a person. With a project like this, Jinmi Abduls doesn’t have to shout for attention, because it rewards listeners who are willing to slow down and listen.
