Nigerian-born independent artist Brodrick draws from one of his most personal experiences on “Chat,” an Afro-drill record that explores love, betrayal, conflict, and the difficult process of rebuilding trust after a relationship has been tested.
Taken from his debut album, Tales Untold, “Chat” holds particular significance for Brodrick because its story comes directly from his own life. Rather than presenting romance as uncomplicated, the song confronts the arguments, vulnerability, cheating, and emotional tension that can surface when two people attempt to repair a damaged relationship.
Sonically, Brodrick blends Afro-inspired songwriting and language with the darker rhythmic energy of UK drill. The combination reflects the two sides of his musical identity, drawing from his Nigerian roots while incorporating influences developed after he relocated abroad at an early age.
Produced by Prodbyzawn and Prodbygravey, “Chat” allows Brodrick’s melodic sensibilities to sit against a drill-driven backdrop. The artist wrote the song himself, maintaining a close connection to the creative process and using personal experiences as the foundation for his storytelling.
Brodrick’s path into music developed through his experiences and relationships within the industry. After working as a road manager for Nigerian artist 1da Banton, he became increasingly interested in creating music himself. He eventually made his artistic debut with “Jump On Dem,” beginning a journey that would lead to Tales Untold.
The debut album serves as a collection of stories and experiences drawn from Brodrick’s life and perspective. Within that body of work, “Chat” stands apart as one of its most personal moments, translating a real relationship experience into a record about the complications of love and the effort required to move forward after trust has been broken.
