Omah Lay titles his latest project, Clarity of Mind, and it is an emphatic, unequivocal statement of acceptance and peace. The album builds on each composite element, creating a melodic flow that is both therapeutic and mellow—indicative of Omay Lay’s distinct sound. The album builds around its titular relevance, unequivocally emphasising the themes of inner peace and a certain depth of understanding. So, unlike many albums, which embrace ambiguous titles, pulling us into a frantic state of finding the clues that link the title’s philosophy with the thematic messages within each track, Omar Lays spares us this trouble, truly bringing clarity of mind.
“I decided to chill for a minute, take care of myself, take care of my family, put my mind back in the right space,” he tells Apple Music’s Africa Now Radio. “It feels like I’ve just been inside doing all this healing, all this self-growth, and I looked at a bunch of records that I made during this time, and I’m like, yeah, this is clarity of mind.”
As his second album, it evidently indicates the evolution of Omar lay as not just an artist but a creative. There are evident contrasts in sound, texture, and lyrical composition to his previous album, Boy Alone, which more or less indicates his understanding and awareness of our evolving musical terrain. With Boy Alone, there was a refinement of Omah Lay’s raw and instinctive expression. It pondered on mental health and emphatically cemented Omah Lay’s infamous melancholic image, but Clarity of Mind expresses a certain calmness, a certain peace. The majority of the songs on the album rest on a steady mid-tempo that appropriately delivers Omah Lay’s chill delivery. It is a complex mix of static harmonies that steadily maintains equilibrium. It is a melange of moody instrumentals with rhythmic flows, which accentuate the themes of clarity, love, self-discovery, and mental clarity.
The album is prefaced with “Artificial Happiness,” and you’re immediately hit with Omah Lay’s mellow percussion and chill, melodic layering. He cleverly explores the intricate interplay between Afrobeats and pop, truly bringing his own expression of Afrofusion. Although the majority of the songs carry Omah Lay’s mellow temperature, there’s a sharp and appreciative contrast in “Waist,” which makes the track very distinct and, in some ways, very alluring. This brings a spike in the general smooth feel of the album. Invariably, it reinforces the idea that contrasts in melodic tempos accentuate sonic perception. The album is also expansive and simply cannot be reduced to a singular, overarching notion. Instead, it operates on a complex synergy between pop, Afrobeats, and gospel traditions. Each song transitions seamlessly into the next, creating a continuous journey.
Although the project is predicated on the focus of mental clarity, it is difficult—almost impossible—not to notice the album’s infatuation with intimacy and subtle erotic connotations. Songs like “Waist” and “Water Spirit” directly and indirectly speak on desire and physical intimacy. Evidently, Omah Lay isn’t discreet in his expression of such themes, highlighting desire as a temporary medium of escape from emotional troubles or internal distress.
In “Coping Mechanism,” the album’s only feature appears. He features ELMAH, whose melodious, mellow voice blends well with the overall sonic theme of the album, and both artists on the track complement each other very well. There’s no sense of overpowering or tension; instead, there’s a harmonious blend of both voices layered with minimal percussion and soft instrumentals.
The general reception of the album has been incredible, with many advocating that this is his best project yet.
The less experimental nature of the album reinforces Omah Lay’s musical idiosyncrasy, so Omah Lay fanatics are constantly reminded of what draws them to his music.
Clarity of Mind tears down Omah Lay’s emotional walls, exposing us to his inner conflicts. Interestingly, he doesn’t express that these internal pressures are resolved, but how he has learned to navigate them. Where prior projects showed crude, unfiltered emotions, Clarity of Mind is predicated on its measured introspection and vulnerability. It indicates his progression as an artist—a differentiation not in a departure from sonic proclivities but in a refinement of his craft. The album doesn’t indicate clarity as a defined state of rest but rather an ongoing process of bettering oneself.
