Angélique Kidjo Makes History as First African Musician and Black African to Receive Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

Beninese music icon Angélique Kidjo has officially made history, becoming the first African musician and first Black African to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The five-time Grammy Award winner was honoured on Tuesday, August 18, during a ceremony in Los Angeles, where she received the 2,854th star in the Recording category. The recognition places Kidjo among the celebrated names permanently commemorated along Hollywood Boulevard.

For an artist whose career has spanned more than four decades, the honour represents another defining milestone in a journey that has consistently pushed African music into global spaces.

Born in Benin, Kidjo established herself internationally through a sound that draws from West African musical traditions while embracing influences from jazz, funk, soul, gospel and other global genres. Her ability to move between cultures without compromising her identity has made her one of the continent’s most respected musical ambassadors.

Her achievement is particularly significant against the backdrop of African music’s current global expansion. Long before Afrobeats became a dominant presence on international charts, Kidjo was performing on major stages, collaborating across continents and introducing global audiences to African sounds and perspectives.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame honour therefore speaks not only to her individual career, but also to the growing recognition of African creativity within the wider entertainment industry.

Kidjo has also built a legacy beyond music. Through her advocacy and humanitarian work, she has championed education, women’s empowerment and social development across Africa, further extending the cultural impact of her career.

At the ceremony, she was joined by Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., among others. The occasion celebrated an artist whose influence has stretched well beyond recordings and performances.

Kidjo’s historic recognition also carries a sense of possibility. As African artists continue to occupy increasingly prominent positions across global entertainment, her achievement stands as a reminder of the generations of artists who helped create that pathway.

From Benin to one of Hollywood’s most recognisable landmarks, Kidjo has spent decades proving that African artistry can be deeply rooted in its culture while remaining universally resonant.

Now, that legacy has a permanent place on Hollywood Boulevard.

For Angélique Kidjo, it is a career-defining honour. For African music, it is another historic marker of its journey into the global mainstream.
