Nigerian artist Portable is no stranger to the spotlight. Last week, posts flooded the internet of him giving props to Skepta after receiving royalties for their collaboration on Tony Montana. Portable may be many things, but his gratitude is undeniable. And it’s no surprise Skepta sees something in him.
“I’ve met so many fake guys in this game, and meeting Portable was refreshing. Whatever Portable does, I recognise. I may not do it myself, but I know that energy and respect it,” Skepta recently shared on X.
How that collaboration came about remains a mystery. But one thing is certain: Skepta’s ability to identify raw talent and craft hits from it speaks volumes about his vision and importance in the music scene.
Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr., better known as Skepta, has been around the block. From his early days in Tottenham to reigning as the king of UK grime, his accolades are endless. But Skepta is more than his achievements. Despite reaching great heights, he has always remained tethered to his Nigerian roots, a rare and admirable quality.
In 2018, Skepta was honored with a chieftaincy title in Ogun State, Nigeria, as “Amuludun of Odo-Aje,” which translates to “Chief Entertainer of Odo Aje,” highlighting his impact in community building. Two years earlier, in 2016, he helped build a playground in his father’s village, a testament to his dedication to giving back.
From Energy with Wizkid in 2018 to Sheevita Juice with Olamide, Like to Party with BOJ and Teezee, his unforgettable Nativeland and Homecoming appearances, Dirty Eyes Evil Manners with Cruel Santino, U (JUJU) with Davido and most recently featuring Odumodublvck and Portable, Skepta has consistently bridged the gap between Nigeria and the UK. He doesn’t owe it to anyone, yet he does it with intention and passion, fostering cultural exchange and mutual respect between both scenes.
December 2024 was another testament to his connection with Nigeria. Skepta hosted a giveaway where he shared some of his items, followed by a Lagos-based MAINS street cast photo shoot with local creatives. These gestures go beyond music; they reflect his commitment to amplifying Nigerian culture globally.
Skepta and Portable
The pathway for artists between Nigeria and the UK may seem smooth now, but it is actions like Skepta’s that have paved the way. He doesn’t just dip in for clout; he invests in relationships, embraces the culture, and uses his platform to uplift others.
Skepta is more than a grime pioneer or a fashion innovator. He’s a cultural connector, a bridge-builder, and a visionary who deserves his flowers for his contributions to the global music and creative scene.
So, while we continue to vibe to his hits and applaud his milestones, let’s also recognise the legacy Skepta is building, because this is how culture thrives.
