The year 2022 is swiftly coming to an end, We can’t believe ‘22 is almost a wrap. This year saw the official kickoff of The Upper spotlight campaign, an initiative designed to spotlight artists on the rise, and it has been a successful run thus far. Of course, this can’t be possible without our avid readers! yes, thank you for visiting our page conscientiously. We dutifully urge you guys to be on the lookout for what’s coming next.
For the first issue of our spotlight edition of the month of November, we shed light on one of the artists currently gaining buzz. Alabo Tuwonimi Tuonims, better known as “Ninety” hails from the city of Port Harcourt.
With the abundance of talents gushing out from the city of Port Harcourt, it’s safe to say PH boys are out to dominate the Nigerian music industry. With the likes of Duncan mighty, Burna boy, Omah Lay, Ajebo Hustlers, and many more creating a big name for themselves, the youngins are definitely motivated and further inspired to take the burgeoning industry by storm.
Ninety, formerly known as Ninety6, describes himself as an Afro-fusion singer, songwriter, and music producer. He is currently signed under FreeMe music. His sound is distinct as the singer blends Pop, R&B, Reggae, and Dancehall. He is from a musically inclined family, his Father was the head of the church choir. Ninety grew up listening to the likes of Michael Jackson and Style plus. Being the first artist from the distribution company(Free me digital) recording label vertical, it’s not far-fetched to assume that he is doing well.
The artiste’s break came with the release of “Touch and follow” in 2021. This song caught the ears of many. His sound was regarded as a breath of fresh air to music lovers and industry heads alike, including Nigerian pop singer Moelogo to whom he gave a shout-out on the song. The end result of the shout-out was a performance at one of Moelogo’s Lagos show held last year. There are rumors that both artists have a song on the way, and honestly, we can’t wait for it.
Preceding the release of “Touch and follow”, he further went on to bless the ear of his fans with a Telz-produced track, “somebody”. This was a totally different vibe from his first release. He got feets moving. His catalog also boasts a Magnito track. Ninety and Famous rapper, Zlatan were guest artists on the record.
Moving forward to 2022, his first single of the year “Diamond” which also happened to be the lead single off his debut project “Rare Gem” released in April. According to Ninety, this project had been in works for a couple years and was meant to cement his name in the industry. His latest single, “Smoke and chill” only released last month is doing considerably well. We’re definitely sure there are more hits in ninety’s Arsenal, only time would tell what this superstar in the making is truly capable of.
