Upper Quintet: Featuring OluwaMillar, Jazmn, Papi Rugio

The Upper Quintet continues to deliver on every week’s musical talent you should listen to, and this edition is no exception. Let’s take a look at the latest line-up:

Alubarika – OluwaMillar

There’s something special about hearing hip hop in an indigenous language, and OluwaMillar delivers exactly that with “Alubarika.” Rapping in Yoruba, he brings a flow and wordplay that keep you nodding along, even if you don’t catch every word. It’s undeniably good stuff. As the Nigerian rap scene has few Indigenous rappers, OluwaMillar is poised to change that narrative.

So Hard – Jazmn

“So Hard” is a dynamic fusion of R&B, Afrobeats, and alternative sounds. Jazmn sings about the pain of a toxic relationship where love isn’t reciprocated. Despite the sad/toxic subject matter, the track’s fast-paced beat creates a lively vibe that will get you moving. Jazmn skillfully turns heartache into a bop you can’t help but enjoy.

Kalakuta Blues (Part 1) – Okvnrin

“Kalakuta Blues (Part 1)” captures the bittersweet feelings of a love that never reached its full potential. With soulful melodies and expressive lyrics, Okvnrin reflects on the longing for a past romance, delivering a story of missed connections and unfulfilled dreams. Kalakuta Blues is different from the usual and it’s one that you’ll love to spin again.

Like This – Papi Rugio

“Like This” by Papi Rugio is about staying motivated and pushing forward. With the line “I didn’t come this far to remain just like this,” he drives home a message of perseverance. The relatable lyrics and upbeat vibe make it a track you’ll enjoy. This song follows the release of his Camaraderie EP, which dropped in March.

Lungs – Anabel Rose

On “Lungs,” Anabel Rose explores themes of love and vulnerability. She expresses her desire for deep intimacy, while also acknowledging the risks of opening up. The track is a beautiful blend of Alternative R&B, Soul, and Bossa Nova influences, with Anabel’s vocals taking centre stage.
