Can you tell us more about your background growing up in Edo state, Nigeria, and how it made you want to produce music?
I’ve always had a deep love for the arts, naturally drawing me to music production when I began playing musical instruments in Church. As I learned more about music production, I realized I had a talent for it. I decided then that this was my path.
Your collaborations include notable artists like Ayra Starr, Libianca, and Omah Lay. How did these partnerships come about, and what was it like working with them?
The collaborations happened when the song gained global popularity. Having those two artists on the track was a no-brainer, and I’m thrilled they agreed. Their contributions made the song even more special.
You’ve worked with international artists like Becky G and Cian Ducrot. How does collaborating with artists from different cultural backgrounds impact your production style?
My goal has always been to create music that resonates with Western audiences. Featuring Becky G and Cian Rhodes on the track validated that achievement, as their involvement showed that my music could cross cultural boundaries.
You’ve been quite the achiever in the music industry for the past couple of years! Could you share some of your most significant accomplishments in the music industry so far?
Before collaborating with Libianca on the hit song “People,” I produced a children’s song called “Ski Wish,” which reached number 20 on Nigeria’s Hot 100. I also gained some traction on YouTube as an internet producer.
As someone born in 1998, you’ve risen quickly in the music production world. What challenges have you faced as a young, Gen-Z producer, and how have you overcome them?
When I started producing, I focused on EDM and other Western genres. One of my main challenges was blending Afrobeats into my style while keeping it original. With a lot of practice, I managed to master this fusion.
Your work spans various artists and potentially different genres. How would you describe your signature sound or production style?
My signature sound is characterized by emotional melodies and slow rhythms, often infused with themes of love.
Can you walk us through your creative process when working on a new track?
When starting a new track, I begin by gathering inspiration from various sources, whether it’s a melody in my head, a sample, or even a mood I’m feeling. Next, I lay down a rough structure, focusing on the main elements like the beat and melody. From there, I experiment with different sounds and layers, tweaking and refining until everything fits together. I like to take breaks to listen with fresh ears, ensuring the track maintains its energy and flow. Finally, I polish the mix and master the track to make sure it sounds great on all systems.
The music industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay current with trends while maintaining your unique identity as a producer?
I stay current with music trends by immersing myself in various genres, following influential artists, and keeping up with industry news. I also experiment with new sounds and techniques, blending them with my unique style. This way, I stay relevant without losing my distinct musical identity.
Are there any projects or collaborations coming up that you’re particularly excited about that you can share with us?
Well, I have some interesting and exciting projects coming up. I have some tracks coming out with super-talented artists like Kaptain, Tomi Owo, and Tariq. There is a talented singer called Elmina. I have some tracks coming out with her as well, and I love those songs
As “Mage the Producer,” what advice would you give to aspiring music producers who are just starting their careers?
My advice for aspiring producers and musicians is to believe in themselves and never give up on whatever goal they are trying to achieve with music. Keep making improvements, keep researching, and keep building yourself. You never know how close you are to achieving that goal, trust me.
