The music scene in Africa has really evolved to a point where new talents are discovered every now and then. It has gone beyond just recognizing our local artists. New sounds and niches have come up and they’ve all been surprisingly appealing; literally makes you want to hear more and more from them. Think about when the Alte scene started gaining recognition in Nigeria, most people listened to the sound for the first time and they could not believe how much they have probably been sleeping on it; even though some people have not totally accepted this genre of music. Truth is, there is really no limit to discovering new sounds and artists from Africa. The spotlight is going to keep switching at different paces. Talking about switching the spotlight, you really should get familiar with another +234 artist called Raytheboffin!

Raytheboffin is a music producer from Jos, Nigeria who experiments with unique sounds to build his musical universe, taking his listeners on a journey through his world. Whilst on his journey of self-discovery, He is one half of music duo Riverays. Riverays is a music group formed by Iver Rivers and Ray the Boffin in 2018 where Iver experiments with his deep-toned rap verses, high melodious vocals and also Ray’s light singing voice that complements the rapping style. They have a couple sensational projects out on popular streaming platforms and you definitely should check them out. The duo released their first EP titled Riverways in 2019; it was accepted by so many people and it did large numbers. Ray has also worked with a number of artists such as Jess ETA, 3Kene, and Joel Prodigee ,to make soulful and refreshing sounds.

Ray the Boffin has just released his debut single “Don’t Kiss and Tell” on the 29th of April. The song is an alte joint featuring Nigerian vocalist Julrity. If you’ve been following up with the alte music scene these past months, you’d agree that this song ticks every box for being a solid alte track. A genre of music that is normally not meant to be only understood, but also felt. The song also got featured on the Alte Cruise playlist on Apple music.

Don’t Kiss and Tell is a dreamy and sensational jam. The type that makes you want to make your mind travel and escape into absolute serenity and space. Ray has a forthcoming debut EP titled “Run Boy, Run” which is set to be relesased later this year. Raytheboffin is signed under a London and Johannesburg-based record label called Outer South, alongside with the likes of Tim Lyre, Ronehi, Skulla and Sute Iwar. One other thing about “Don’t Kiss and Tell” is the replay value. The song is somewhat short so you want to put it on repeat and just allow the lyrics and beats to sink in until you find yourself lip synching eventually.

Raythebooffin x Julrity combo delivered on the track and I think it’ll be a good run to look forward to his upcoming EP and see whatever he has coming with it. He describes his new project and upcoming EP as a beginning of a wholesome chapter in his life and career and the name Raytheboffin screams out TALENT , because on some days he’s a producer, some days an artiste, and on some days he’s mixing and mastering a project. I think everyone should definitely start by listening to the new song “Don’t Kiss and Tell” and figure out how stanning Ray is actually worth it.
